The Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is especially important for water balance and to clean or clear the interstitial space (space between cells) from excess of fluid and proteins. Almost all tissues are drained by the lymphatic system. Only the brain, the skin and the bones are an exceptions. Without the lymphatic system we would suffer from oedema almost everywhere.

The role of the lymphatic system, although it seems trivial, is of paramount importance. Indeed, if lymphatic drainage was not working, we would die within 24 hours.

The lymph nodes also participate in the maturation and storage of immune cells. This will be discussed in the immunity section.
